The year is 1872. Twelve-year-old Matthew Wilcox leads a charmed life on his family's sprawling ranch in Washington Territory until a series of tragic events leave him orphaned and in the clutches of a vicious band of outlaws. Threatened by the gang leader's perverted cousin, Top Hat, Matthew also faces Indian attacks, dangerous wildlife, and a deadly snowstorm. He survives but burns with an overwhelming hunger for revenge.

Thirteen years later, Matthew - now a Spokane County sheriff - realizes that Top Hat is riding again with a new gang called the Mad Hatters. It means risking his friends, his family and the love of a good woman, but Matthew must find the man who destroyed what he once loved most in the world. To that end, he and his posse venture into Idaho gold country to capture the Mad Hatters.

Top Hat, however, has a different idea. He turns the tables, heading to the sheriff's hometown of Granville and going after everyone Matthew holds dear.

What follows will haunt Sheriff Wilcox for the rest of his life as he confronts the hatred, vengeance and retribution buried deep in his own soul. Matthew will do anything, though, to put an end to A DEADMAN'S LAMENT.

Deadman Lament The Deadman Series Book 1 edition by Linell Jeppsen Literature Fiction eBooks

Great characters abound in this western tale. The main character, the hero of the story, is well developed and doesn't disappoint. He's human and courageous with a soft side that makes him realistic. The cast of supporting characters is also wonderfully believable. As tragedy befalls each one, the reader feels a sense of loss, anger and a lust for justice.

One interesting side note is the way the author treats the American Indian as a human beings with everyday cares and woes, grief raising children, and a profound sense of loss when a family member is killed. So often, western novelists treat the Native American as harsh, unfeeling, brutish savages with no compassion for family and tribe. While it is documented that certain rituals and belief systems that are harsh by Judeo Christian standards actually were/are a part of the historical belief systems of the various Indian tribes, they are, nonetheless human beings who love and live passionately. They do respond to love and respect with favor. They also respond to injustice with anger and the desire to have things set straight.

Deadman Lament The Deadman Series Book 1 edition by Linell Jeppsen Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Like the author, this was my first western read...consequently, I have no others in this genre to compare it to. I did think it was a well written book with an interesting story. I am encouraged to try other western novels after reading this book.
A refreshing western set in the northwestern US. The characters are drawn with sensitivity and strength, and the story line is believable. The author obviously did some research in writing this book. More complex than older western stories, it brings to life the characters and helps one connect with our past history in the western United States.
Oh! Deadmans Lament was so good! Once you start reading,it is hard to stop. I am anxious to get started on Deadmans Fury! If I could I would give this story more than five stars! Poor Matthew, he has had so many bad ups and downs. I'm pretty sure he marries Iris Imes in the next sequel. I sure hope their love for each other will help ease his past aches and pains. He has lost his parents and so many friends from the malice and hatred from one enemy! I highly recommend this book!! You people who love westerns will regret not reading this book.
The settings and carectors reminded me of the old, ancient men in the tinny town 50 miles south of Spokane where I was raised. Gritty can do, men who could tell stories of shooting drunk Indians and helping on posses when they were just teens. Cabins and old farmsteds that I had seen in my youth and on my bike touring were populated with the original occupants through the author's words. Thank you.
WOW I would so love to see this book as a movie. I always loved watching westerns as a child, and although this is not the usual genre that I read, I am an avid follower of Ms Jeppsen’s work, so decided to give it a go and was not disappointed.

It has all the characters you could want. The evil bad guy, the Indians and of course the town sheriff.

There is fighting, death, joy, love and such sorrow at times it makes your heart break. It moves at a steady pace to keep you hanging in to see what comes next.

When it came to the end I smiled and felt happy for the young Matthew Wilcox.
I unknowingly read the second book in the trilogy first. I was so blown away by that book that I immediately purchased books one and three. None of these books disappointed. I am a fan of westerns and I think this series has to be among the best. The hero Matthew Wilcox is a character that is so easy to empathize with. As the first book opens he is twelve years old and his wonderful childhood is about to be destroyed by a violent incident that leaves him orphaned. Matthew will eventually overcome this tragedy but will face others. He has courage and grit. He loves his friends and family. The secondary characters are well done. The author's descriptions of the pacific northwest are so well done. If you are a fan of westerns give yourself a treat and read the entire trilogy.
I chose the five star rating on this story because I found myself eager to get some time with my kindle to read more of the story. It was a story where I really got behind the hero and wanted to see him do well. He was a great hero too. Linell Jeppsen is one of the best descriptive authors I've read. I felt like I could see the hero and I couldn't wait to get back to the story to read a little more. I have to read in bits and pieces these days. This story was perfect and I really enjoyed it. You too will root for Matt for all you're worth. I loved the ending but don't want to give it away.

The only drawback to the story was that so many names began with the same letter. I got a little confused with so many names being similar. That's the only thing I can mention as a downside.

I highly recommend this story, even if westerns aren't your cup of tea, the story has a lot to offer and I recommend it.
